# Will a carbine buffer work in a rifle-length buffer tube?

**Verdict: No**

No. Rifle and carbine buffer systems are different lengths and are designed as matched sets — buffer, spring and receiver extension change together.

The buffer, the spring and the receiver extension are one system, sized so the bolt carrier travels exactly far enough and is returned with the right force. A rifle-length extension is longer and takes a longer buffer and a longer, stiffer spring. Put a carbine buffer in it and the assembly no longer fills the space it has to fill.

- **Rifle system** — Fixed stock, longer extension, rifle buffer and rifle spring
- **Carbine system** — Adjustable stock, shorter extension, carbine buffer and carbine spring
- **Mixing the two** — Not interchangeable in either direction

This is a separate question from mil-spec against commercial, which is about the outside diameter of the extension and which stock slides over it. Length and diameter are two independent ways for the same parts to be wrong together.

> **Caution:** A short-stroking or failing-to-lock rifle is what a mismatched buffer system looks like, and it reads as an ammunition or gas problem. If the recoil system was recently changed, rule it out first rather than chasing the gas block.
